Cameroon: Former ambassador dies in prison

Yaoundé, Cameroon (PANA) – A former Cameroonian ambassador in Washington DC, Jérôme Mendouga, who was serving time at the Central Prison of Kodengui in Yaoundé, died on Saturday at the General Hospital of Yaoundé where he had been on admission for weeks for an undisclosed illness.

Mr Mendouga was been jailed in Yaoundé in April 2009 in the "Albatros Affair" named of the aircraft of the president of the Republic.

The former ambassador was found guilty for embezzling 2 billion CFAF with a former Secretary General of the presidency, Jean Marie Atangana Mebara, who is also jailed in the same prison.

The amount of was reserved for repairs of the Boeing 767 – 200 belonging to the president of the Republic, Paul Biya, in June 2003 in Seattle, USA, the renting of another aircraft for his private trips and also purchasing a new plane.

Mendouga served as Cameroonian ambassador in several African countries before being ambassador to Washington DC for 14 years, from 1994 to 2008.
