Burundi: Burundi, Rwanda set up joint commission to investigate deaths on border lake

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – Burundi and Rwanda have set up a joint commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the cause of death of at least five persons, whose corpses have been recovered by fishermen from Lake Rweru, a small body of water straddling their common border.

The corpses were found on the lake between Saturday and Monday.

According to independent Radio Publique African (RPA) in Burundi, which was the first to raise the alarm on that incident on Saturday, more bodies of men, women and children have been cited by fishermen in the area over the last two weeks.

Burundi's Minister of Interior, Edouard Nduwimana, confirmed the establishment of a joint investigation commission in order to clarify the situation regarding the corpses which have not been identified and their origin remains a mystery.

The team includes Burundian and Rwandan administrative officials and police officers but no deadline was set for them to present their report.
