Burundi: '96% of Burundians have easy, regular access to radio'

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – Almost all Burundians of nine years and above have easy access to radio, as against 60% for television and 37% for written press.

This is the result of a media survey carried out by the international research and communication group (IMAR, research and consultancy) for the Institute Panos Great Lakes (IPGL), based in Bujumbura.

It said the result would help to better understand the Burundian media landscape, the penetration rate and audience of the different Burundian media in a bid to determine their importance and place in the lives of the people.

On average, a Burundian of 15 years or above listens to radio for 99 minutes per day, according to the survey.

About information and communication technology, less than one Burundian out of ten, aged 19 years and more uses the internet.

The type-profile of the internet user is a woman and a man aged 25 to 39 years, living in cities with high standard of living.

In another development, the access through the internet to the traditional audiovisual media is limited to internet users.

The Burundian media landscape has 16 radio stations, including three community radio stations, five television stations, 18 newspapers (including many that come out rarely because of financial problems), three recording studios and five press houses, according to the National Communication Council (CNC).

The list does not include the institutional media, such as the defence and security corps, Parliament, ministries, state and para-public organs.
