Burkina Faso: UN warns those 'threatening' the transition process
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) – The UN Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, said on Wednesday in Ouagadougou that the international community would not pardon those "threatening" the transition process in Burkina Faso.
"Those threatening the transition should know that the international community is watching them and will hold them responsible. The international community will not pardon any breach to the transition,” warned Mr Feltman at the end of talks with acting president, retired diplomat Michel Kafando.
According to the UN diplomat, all transitions in the world are fragile and difficult and there is no transition without problem.
"I congratulated Burkina president Kafando for his determination to carry out this transition process and hold elections according to the programme set in the transition charter," said Mr Feltman.
Since its establishment, the government led by a military Prime minister has been facing multiple challenges. Two ministers and several public and private personalities have been sacked under the pressure of demonstrators.
On 4 February, as hundreds demonstrated at the offices of the ministry in charge of Trade against the expensive goods, the weekly council of ministers was interrupted by a protest movement initiated by the ex-guards of ousted president Blaise Compaore.
Another demonstration is planned for Thursday morning at the national square, epicentre for the popular uprising that ousted president Compaoré.
Mr Feltman said that "it is essential that the transition institutions continue respecting the aspirations of the Burkina people by respecting human rights and the physical integrity of all citizens".
