Benin opposition to protest constitution revision

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) – A coalition of opposition parties will on Saturday in Cotonou hold a meeting and stage a peaceful march to protest against a draft bill to review the constitution.

A statement made public by the Convention of left wing forces and the Union Makes the Nation said the demonstrators would demand the withdrawal of the draft bill on the amendment of the Constitution and also protest against the "general mismanagement in the country".

They called on all democratic organizations, as well as the compatriots with the same cause, to join the demonstration.

The issue of draft bill on the amendment of the Beninese constitution, introduced on 6 June to Parliament by president Boni Yayi, has sparked disputes.

Although the issue is not yet planned for the next session, several political parties, trade unions and civil society organizations reject the proposed amendments.
