'Bandwidth cost crashes in Nigeria'

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - The cost of bandwidth has crashed by 200 per cent in Nigeria due to the advent of several undersea cable systems that have landing points on the country's shores, according to the online Nigerian news site Communications Weekly.

The report said the battle among the undersea cable system operators to tap into the country's lucrative Internet market has forced down the cost.

The cost per megabyte per second (Mbps) has fallen from U$300-US$400 to US$110-US$115, for ''Tier 2 operators'' which are mostly internet service providers, banks and telecommunications operators, among others.

The price fall is however restricted to Lagos, with the cost of Mbps outside the economic capital city remaining unchanged.

The cost of Mbps in the capital city of Abuja is US$1,200-US$1,500, while that of the northern city of Kano is US$2,000, due to the cost of transmission as well as the role of third party operators.

Bandwidth describes the amount of data that can be carried from one point to another in a given time period (usually a second).
