African craft industry urged to adapt to technological changes

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) – The Burkina Faso minister of Trade and Craft industry, Harouna Kaboré, on Friday said that the African craft industry sector must adapt the technological changes in a context marked by competition.

‘African craft industries take much to the development of their countries and must be sustained’, he said while calling for the introduction of new technologies and the establishment of quality norms in the sector without losing its authenticity.

The Burkinabe minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 15th international craft industry fair in Ouagadougou, under the theme "African craft industry, demands of the market and technological development".

The fair, which is due to end on 4 November, brought together 250 professional buyers, 3,500 exhibitors and will be attended by 300,000 participants.

According to Mr Kabore, the African craft industry must adapt the technological changes, adding that the weakness of the added value in the sector cannot help the industry to develop.

The Burkinabe president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, and Canadian General Governor, Mrs Julie Payette, attended the opening ceremony of the 15th edition of the international craft industry fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO).

Because of the fresh outbreak of terrorist attacks, security measures have been tightened in and around the fair.

‘The country is targeted by terrorist attacks (…) We reassured all participants that the government has deployed a very important security strategy," said minister Kaboré who, however, urged all participants and other visitors to respect the security measures.
