AU condemns coup attempt in Chad
Khartoum, Sudan (PANA)- The African Union (AU) on Friday strongly condemned what it described as an attempt to destabilize Chad, expressing deep concern over a foiled coup attempt in that country.
In a press release, received here by PANA, the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AUC), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said she has learnt "with deep concern about the attempt to destabilize Chadian institutions", as stated in the communiqué of 1 May 2013 of the Chadian Government.
The statement said the African Union "strongly condemns this attempt, which comes at a time when Chad is making sustained efforts to promote its socio-economic development and facilitate political dialogue, through the establishment of consultative structures bringing together all stakeholders, so as to deepen the democratic process."
The statement quoted Dr. Dlamini-Zuma as recalling AU’s principled position on the total rejection of unconstitutional change of government and the recourse to armed violence to advance political claims.
"The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the support of the AU to the ongoing efforts of the Chadian Government, both with respect to development and the promotion of political dialogue." the release stressed.
It said Dr. Dlamini-Zuma seizes this opportunity to reiterate AU’s deep appreciation for the outstanding contribution of Chad to the African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA), and acknowledges the huge sacrifices made within that framework.
Reports say that four high-ranking public officials, including two military generals and two lawmakers, have been arrested for attempting to overthrow the Chadian government.
The arrested officials, in custody since Wednesday, are Gen. Weiding Assi Assoue, who was a provincial governor for several terms, Gen. David Gomine, the head of the military tribunal, and two lawmakers, Mahamat Kadre and former health minister Saleh Makki.
