Jakarta, Indonesia (PANA) - Captain Amara Diouf scored twice as African champions Senegal produced a major upset at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, defeating Argentina 2-1 on Saturday.
Diouf opened the scoring in the 6th minute, firing an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom corner from the left flank, CAF Online reported.
Argentina dominated possession after falling behind but failed to capitalize on several chances to equalise.
They were made to pay as Diouf struck again in the 38th minute, rolling the ball home at a tight angle after his cutback attempt looped kindly back to him.
The South Americans continued pressing in the second half and grabbed a stoppage time lifeline when Agustin Ruberto's speculative free kick somehow squirmed through goalkeeper Serigne Diouf's grasp.
However, Senegal held on for a famous victory despite late Argentine pressure. Diouf was inspirational throughout with his tenacious running and dazzling dribbles.
The captain led by example to shock one of the tournament favourites.
This result demonstrates Africa's rising pedigree at youth level after African sides Mali and Morocco won their opening matches at the World Cup on Friday.
Senegal now face a pivotal Group D clash with Poland on Tuesday.
