2017 COSAFA Cup: Tanzania through to quarter-finals

Rustenburg, South Africa (PANA) - Tanzania on Thursday qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2017 COSAFA Cup in South Africa, even after drawing 1-1 with Mauritius in a Group A, Day 3 match.

The result ensured that Tanzania ended their group campaign on 5 points, the same as the second-placed Angola which drew 0-0 with Angola.

Both teams tied on 5 points but the Tanzanians went through on account of their superior number of goals scored. They scored 3 goals and conceded 1 while Mauritius scored one and conceded none.

This therefore means that Angola, three-time winners (1999, 2001, 2004), Mauritius and Malawi will head for home.

Tanzania will join the 6 teams who drew bye into the quarters - Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland. Their quarter-final opponents on 2 July are hosts South Africa.

Botswana play Zambia in the quarters a day before (1 July), the same day Namibia and Lesotho will square up.

Swaziland await the winner of Group B out of Zimbabwe (4 points from 2 matches), Madagascar (4 points) and Mozambique (3 points). The 4th team in that group, Seychelles, have already been eliminated even with Day 3 matches yet to be played on Friday.

The group's last matches will be Mozambique vs Madagascar and Zimbabwe vs Seychelles
