2014 CAF Champions league: Champions ES Setif pocket US$1.5 million
Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - For winning the 2014 CAF Champions league, Algerian club, ES Setif, is now US$1,500,000 richer.
The Algerians Saturday defeated AS Vita of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on away goals rule. Setif drew 2-2 with Vita in the first leg final in DRC and the second leg in Algeria ended 1-1, meaning that the Algerians won 5-4 on away goals rule.
The Congolese take home US$1,000,000 for placing second.
Semi-finalists -- TP Mazembe also of DRC (semi-final losers against Setif) and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia (losers against Vita) -- pocket US$700,000 each.
Third teams in the group stage -- Sudan's Al-Hilal (Group A) and Tunisia's Espérance de Tunis (Group B) -- earn US$ 500,000 each while fourth-placed teams -- Zamalek of Egypt (Group A) and Al-Ahly Benghazi of Libya (Group B) -- picked US$ 400,000 each.
Since the 2009 season, there was an increase in prize money to be shared between the top eight clubs.
With the 2014 victory, ES Setif has now won the cup twice, the first being in 1988, while AS Vita won once (in 1973) and was runners up twice in 1981, 2014.
