Mauritanian PM hails country’s economic performance

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The Mauritanian Prime minister, Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf, has hailed the “good overall management” of his country’s economy despite the serious international financial crisis.

"The efforts made by the government have enabled our country to see, for the second consecutive year, growth and consolidation of macro-economic stability,” he told Parliament on Thursday in Nouakchott.

Assessing his government's performance for the past year, Mr Laghdaf said those performances had been made possible thanks to the implementation of "sound policies added to the excellent health of the mining sector".

"The performances have been in accord with the goals set with a growth rate of 4.8% and an inflation rate of about 5.9% thanks to progressive liberalization.

"The foreign reserves reached a record of US$522 million in late September last year and should cover 3.9 months of import in late December last year," he said.
