Mauritania: Gold company to sack 200-500 employees

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - Tasiast Mauritania Limited SA, a subsidiary of the Canadian Company, Kinross, which exploits a gold mine in northern Mauritania, on Wednesday announced the dismissal of between 200 to 500 employees, citing “economic reasons”.

"This difficult decision by the management follows the tough economic situation which the gold mine of Tasiast is facing," says the company in a press declaration.

The significant drop and the volatility in the price of gold on the international market are the main reason for the dismissals, designed to reduce production costs, the company said.

"In view of this, Tasiast Mauritania has given up the expansion of its gold treatment unit whose aim was to take its production to 38,000 tonnes/day.

Earlier in April 2013, Tasiast dismissed 280 workers for the same reasons.
