Mauritania: Mauritanian media dominated by next presidential election

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - For the second consecutive week, the media in Mauritania was dominated by the next presidential election to be held under the Republican calendar between April and July 2014.

The daily "Le Rénovateur" wonders if the party of the Islamist movement "Tawassul," which became the major party of the parliamentary opposition following legislative elections held in November/December 2013, but boycotted by the radical opposition, will take part in the 2014 presidential elections.

The party has threatened to boycott the upcoming presidential vote if guarantees of transparency are not provided.

The daily "Quotidien de Nouakchott " on Tuesday published an interview with Professor Lo Gourmo Abdul, vice president of the Union of Forces of Progress (UFP), a member of the Coordination of Democratic Opposition (COD), a collective that boycotted the legislative and municipal elections held November/December 2013.

Mr Abdoul discussed at length the issue of dialogue between the government and the opposition, saying "a problem of timing cannot preclude a consensual solution with a view to an inclusive peaceful presidential election likely to pave the way for new political perspectives conducive to peace and stability".

The daily "Le Calame," noted that "the campaign for the 2014 presidential election has already begun".

This daily recalled trips made by two candidates - Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, an anti-slavery activist, who is currently touring the river valley and the incumbent president, who so far has not declared his candidacy "but who last week sent a clear message of his true intentions".
