Mauritius: School of Agriculture is 100 years old

Réduit, Mauritius (PANA) - The School of Agriculture of Mauritius will celebrate its centenary this October, PANA has learned from the University of Mauritius.

According to Jean-Claude Autrey, Vice Chairman of the Board of Administration of the University, Mauritius is one of the few countries in the southern hemisphere that can boast of having a century-old history in agricultural training.

''The School of Agriculture has played a major role in the development of the island’s agriculture,'' he said.

Autrey said the School engages in the training of human resources and the application of technology in relation to the present and future developments in the agricultural fields.

Today, the Faculty offers more than 30 programmes that include aquaculture, natural resources management and food security.

Vice-Chancellor Romeela Mohee said the School is fully equipped to face the future that will be characterised by biotechnology, genomics, IT applications in agricultural production, use of satellites, challenges linked to climate change, preservation of the biodiversity and veterinary services.
