Mauritania: CENI tasks candidates on decent electioneering campaign

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The Mauritanian national independent electoral commission (CENI) has asked the five candidates for the 21 June presidential polls to respect its code of conduct as electioneering campaign got underway Friday.

During the 15-day campaign, CENI wants the candidates to project their programmes through the media and direct contacts with populations within the rules, pledging equal access to State-controlled media.

According to CENI, the candidates must refrain from behaviours and activities capable of sparking hatred, violence or likely to breach the dignity and private life of other candidates.

For this year’s election, each candidate will be allowed to project his/her programmes over one and half hours on national television and two and half hours on national radio for free.

The presidential poll is boycotted by almost all opposition leaders.
