Mauritius: Campaign for production of ecological bags launched in Mauritius

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) – The Mauritian Ministry of Women Affairs on Saturday launched a sensitization campaign for the production of ecological bags as the government moves to ban the use of plastic bags in the island as from January 2016.

“We want to sensitize women on the negative impact of plastic bags and to familiarize them with other alternatives so that they can support efforts that are made to protect our environment," the Minister, Aurore Perraud, said.

According to her, the impact of climate change on women is recognized as a priority at the international level "where the links between gender equality and climate change have been underlined".

She recalled the focus that was made on the impact of climate change on women and children at the 17th conference on climate change in Durban, South Africa, in December 2011.

The Minister indicated that during this campaign, women will be trained in the production of several types of bags for shopping, conferences and travel, amongst others.

“This initiative is meant also to help the women increase their revenue," she concluded.
