Mauritanian gendarme rescued from AQMI kidnappers

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The Mauritanian gendarme, Ely Ould Moctar, kidnapped on 20 December by armed groups from Northern Mali, has been rescued, according to a statement from the Mauritanian military on Saturday.

The statement said Moctar is sound and safe but did not specify how the gendarme was rescued.

Freedom for Moctar was first disclosed last weekend by his wife but this was not confirmed at the time.

The Islamist and terrorist movement, Al Qaida in Islamic Maghreb, claimed responsibility for the abduction.
