Burkina Faso president in Niamey to attend AES Heads of state summit

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, left Ouagadougou early on Friday afternoon for the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to take part Saturday in the Summit of Heads of State of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The heads of state of the member countries of the AES will meet in Niamey for a summit devoted to the life of the Alliance and its consolidation, according to a press release from the Burkina Faso Presidency.

This first-ever summit will bring together delegations from AES member countries - Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso - to discuss issues and challenges common to the three states.

Security and defence, the fight against terrorism, and economic, cultural and commercial exchanges will be the key points of this AES meeting, according to the same source.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to consolidate cooperation among the three countries, with a view to pooling intelligence and resources to bring about genuine peace in the AES region and promote inclusive development for the benefit of the peoples of the Sahel.

The Alliance of Sahel States was set up by Presidents Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, Assimi Goïta of Mali and Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger, following the signing of the Liptako-Gourma Charter on 16 September 2023.
