ECOWAS launches project to involve young people in electoral observation

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), is holding a five-day training workshop from 17 to 21 October 2025 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, to prepare young observers to participate in election observation missions.

The initiative, implemented as part of the pilot project "Integrating Youth in the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission" marks a milestone in promoting the inclusion of young people in democratic governance throughout the region, according to an ECOWAS statement.

The training brings together 22 young observers from 11 ECOWAS member states, who will be deployed on election day, 25 October 2025, to observe the electoral process in Côte d'Ivoire.

The project aims to strengthen youth participation in electoral processes across the West African region, promote inclusive democratic governance and strengthen electoral integrity.

This is the first time that young observers will be officially integrated into an ECOWAS election observation mission.
