Five candidates cleared to contest AfDB presidential election

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) - Five candidates have been cleared to contest May's election to choose a new president for the African Development Bank (AfDB).

A press release by the bank said the five candidates, including a woman, come from five African countries.

It said the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors on the Election of the AfDB President met on 11 and 12 February 2025 at the Bank Group’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. 

The Steering Committee, after examining the candidatures, cleared the candidates for the vote during the next election to be held on 29 May 2025.

The candidates are: Mr. Amadou Hott of Senegal, Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo of Zambia and Mr. Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania.

The rest are: Mr. Abbas Mahamat Tolli of Chad and Ms. Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala of South Africa.

The winner will replace Dr. Adesina Akiwumi of Nigeria, who was elected as the 8th AfDB President and served for two terms. 

He was first elected to the position on 28 May 28, 2015. He was unanimously re-elected for a second five-year term on 27 August 2020.

The President of the AfDB serves a five-year term that can be renewed once.
