The PSC reaffirms the AU's commitment to respect Libya's sovereignty
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (PSC) emphasised the need to strengthen and unify all legitimate Libyan institutions to create conditions conducive to the successful holding of simultaneous, inclusive, credible and transparent presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.
It also reaffirmed the AU's unwavering commitment to respect the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity of the Libyan state.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its extraordinary session on Thursday at the level of Heads of State and Government on the situation in Libya and reported by the Libyan media, the PSC reaffirmed the AU's solidarity with the Libyan people in their efforts to restore peace, security and stability in their country.
According to the document, the AU is committed to ‘continuing to support the Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, facilitated by the United Nations, towards general elections, as a viable and sustainable approach to addressing the challenges facing the country’.
In its communiqué, the PSC also emphasised the AU's commitment ‘to supporting an inclusive, Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, including national reconciliation, facilitated by the AU in cooperation with the United Nations’.
The African Peace and Security Council also stressed the importance of urgently resolving the challenges facing the High Council of State in Libya, while taking into account the need for Libyan stakeholders to refrain from any actions and statements that could exacerbate divisions in Libya and aggravate the current situation.
It called on all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive national political process to end the long period of transition in Libya and achieve sustainable peace and development.
The PSC welcomed the commitment of the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Manfi, to address the challenges facing Libya, as well as the important work of the President of Congo-Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and the African High-Level Committee on Libya, which led to the signing of the Libyan Reconciliation Charter in Addis Ababa on 14 February.
The African Peace and Security Council called on all parties to ensure its implementation, urging those who have not yet signed it to join the consensus and sign the National Reconciliation Charter without further delay.
It reaffirmed its firm rejection of any form of external interference in the country's internal affairs, calling on all external parties to refrain from interfering in Libya's internal affairs.
The meeting of the African Peace and Security Council was attended by: the President of the Libyan Presidential Council; the President of Uganda and Chair of the Peace and Security Council for July 2025, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni; the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef; President of Congo-Brazzaville and Chair of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, Denis Sassou Nguesso; and Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh.
