Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously endorsed Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama as the sole candidate of the regional body for chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027.
A statement by ECOWAS on Friday said the decision was made by the ministers at their 95th ordinary session in Abuja Nigeria.
“It follows a request of the Government of Ghana for the support of member states for the candidacy of the Republic of Ghana to the chairmanship of the African Union in 2027,” it said.
The ministers recommended to the Authority of the Heads of State and Government “to adopt the Declaration of Support for the Candidacy of the Republic of Ghana for the Chairmanship of the African Union for the year 2027”.
Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the Authority of Heads of State and government of ECOWAS is expected to adopt the declaration on Sunday.
He extended Ghana's appreciation to the ECOWAS ministers for this declaration.
"Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama", he posted on social media.
The rotating AU Chairmanship is for a year and the final decision rests with the AU Assembly, which elects the Chairperson through a secret ballot requiring a two-thirds majority.
