Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on Tuesday held consultations with the Ambassadors of the Alliance of Sahel States --Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – accredited to the African Union.
A press release issued by the AU said the meeting “provided an opportunity to exchange views on the political situation in their respective countries and explore avenues for renewed engagement towards the restoration of constitutional order, in line with AU norms and shared commitments”.
It said as part of the Commission’s continued efforts to encourage dialogue and support peaceful solutions, the Chairperson has sent letters to the respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the three countries, inviting them to Addis Ababa for further consultations.
It said these discussions aim to “identify a consensual and time-bound roadmap for a return to constitutional governance”. All three countries, who are former French colonies, are ruled by the military after successful coups. They withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to form the Alliance of Sahel States.
The statement said the AU remains committed to working with all Member States in the spirit of solidarity, cooperation, and respect for the principles enshrined in the AU Constitutive Act.
