Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The South African Government on Monday extended its sincere condolences to Australia following Sunday’s deadly terrorist attacks in Sydney.
At least 16 people died and dozens more were wounded in a shooting at Sydney's popular Bondi Beach that targeted an Australia's Jewish community. New South Wales police said two suspects had been taken into custody, a father and son duo, one of whom later died.
At least 42 people, including a child, were hospitalised. The attack, which occurred on the first day of Hanukkah, was declared a terrorist incident by the Australian authorities.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families and friends of the victims. We condemn this senseless violence, which appears to have targeted the Jewish faithful while they were lighting candles for Hanukkah at Bondi Beach.
"There is no justification for terrorism or attacks on any group based on faith or identity,” said the Department of International Affairs & Co-operation.
