AU chair expresses concern about armed clashes in Tripoli

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed “deep concern” over the recent armed clashes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, which resulted in loss of life and property damage.

A statement issued on Saturday said he welcomed the ceasefire and the return of cautious calm, while urging all parties to refrain from actions or statements that could further destabilise the fragile security situation.

The statement said emphasising the importance of demilitarising the capital, he supported efforts to restore civilian order and uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in line with international law.

He called for national responsibility and engagement in a “comprehensive political process” to end Libya’s prolonged transitional phase and achieve lasting peace and development.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s strong support for Libya and urged all stakeholders to commit to the National Reconciliation Charter, signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025.
