Top UN official in Libya meets African diplomats

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, on Wednesday met a Group of African Ambassadors in Tripoli.

Their discussions focused on improving coordination between the UN and the African Union (AU) to strengthen cooperation on issues of common interest, including regional security, migration and support for national reconciliation.

She was accompanied by her deputy and UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Anis Chouma, and the Group of African Ambassadors, UNSMIL said in a statement.

Their discussions also focused on the work of the UN Mission, the statement said, adding that it provided an opportunity to take stock of the work of the Advisory Committee and examine the regional challenges that have affected or have been affected by developments in Libya.

Hosted by the Ghanaian Ambassador to Libya, the meeting was part of the first round of consultations by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General with the diplomatic corps accredited to Libya.

Ms. Tetteh has held a series of meetings with Libyan and international officials to discuss ways of advancing the political process in the country.

Mrs. Tetteh discussed the results of her recent meetings and next steps with US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Jeremy Brent, underlining the importance of consistent international support to achieve progress.

In a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister, Ramadan Boujnah, Ms. Tetteh exchanged views on political, economic and security challenges, reaffirming her commitment to a comprehensive process to address these issues and promote national reconciliation.

She also met the French Ambassador, Mustafa Mihraje, to discuss political, economic and security challenges and the work of the Consultative Committee.

For his part, the French ambassador underlined his country's support for the efforts of the UN mission to facilitate a comprehensive political process aimed at building peace and stability in Libya.

The political process in Libya is at a complete standstill due to the deadlock between the protagonists in the Libyan crisis over disputes relating to electoral laws and outstanding political issues.

UNSMIL has launched a new mediation initiative aimed at relaunching the political process via a Advisory Committee made up of 20 prominent Libyans who will submit proposals to break the current deadlock.
