AUC Chairperson meets African Group at the UN
New York, US (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, on Saturday met with the African Group at the United Nations (UN) on the margins of 80th UN General Asembly this week.
A press release by the AU said he briefed Ambassadors on the Commission’s priorities, including peace and security, climate action, global health and the strengthening of the Africa CDC, food security agriculture, the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area, as well as Africa’s advocacy for reparations and justice.
He also underlined the critical importance of funding for effectiveness of peacekeeping, and the centrality of Africa’s voice in shaping global governance reforms, particularly the reform of the UN Security Council.
The press release said the Ambassadors congratulated the Chairperson on his election and welcomed his engagement.
They reaffirmed, in alignment with his vision, that only through unity, collective action, and strengthened multilateral cooperation can Africa address the pressing challenges of our time and unlock its full potential for peace, resilience, and shared prosperity.
Mr. Youssouf is expected to hold high-level engagements, including a meeting with the UN Secretary-General, to further strengthen the partnership between the AU and UN.
The AU said the Chairperson will also be involved in a wide range of activities, including high level events, bilateral meetings, engagements with different African and International Community stakeholders, member states, and discussions on global issues of peace and security and financing. Other subjects are sustainable development, human rights, youth and women empowerment, health and climate change, among others, emphasising the AU's role in promoting and advocating Africa's interests on the global stage.
