Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent a high-profile delegation to engage with Mozambican leaders as tensions over the disputed October poll threaten the region’s stability.
The Government and the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) says the engagement which is being led by Professor Sydney Mufamadi, the National Security Adviser, aims to "demonstrate South Africa's commitment towards finding an amicable solution to the impasse in Mozambique".
"The government recognises the interconnected nature of regional security and is determined to uphold its responsibilities in fostering peace and stability in southern Africa. South Africa reaffirms its commitment to support Mozambique in restoring peace and stability, and ensuring the safety of everyone," they noted in a statement received by PANA.
The statement noted that both nations are "leveraging their strong diplomatic ties" to ensure security and restore order.
The Lebombo port of entry between the two nations remains open, despite the violent protests.
