Libya, AU reach agreement to reopen the organization's Tripoli office after ten-year hiatus

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The head of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity, al-Taher al-Baour, has signed an agreement with the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, to resume the activities of the continental organization's office in Tripoli after a 10-year hiatus.

The signing of the agreement on Thursday at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, took place on the sidelines of the 46th session of the Executive Council of the Union, in the presence of the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, according to a statement issued by the Libyan Foreign Ministry.

The resumption of the work of the AU Office in Tripoli is a confirmation of the state of security and stability that prevails in Libya and the return of many embassies and diplomatic missions to the capital Tripoli, which will help activate the channels of diplomatic consultation and coordination to serve the interests of the Libyan people, the same source added.

The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, welcomed the signing of this "historic headquarters agreement with the Libyan authorities, transferring the AU Liaison Office based in Tunis to Libya, seven years after its relocation".

In a post on the "X" platform, he reiterated that "the AU will continue to support the peace and reconciliation processes in Libya".

In recent years, the African Union has been involved in the search for a solution to the crisis in Libya through the African Union High Commission on Libya, chaired by Congo, which is working to organize a conference on Libyan national reconciliation in cooperation with the Presidential Council, which has put in place a national reconciliation strategy.

The various Libyan factions are due to sign a charter for national reconciliation in Addis Ababa this Friday on the sidelines of the AU summit.
