AU urges Ethiopia and Eritrea to renew peace commitment on 25th anniversary of Algiers agreement that ended war
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union (AU) on Sunday urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to renew their commitment to the spirit of the Algiers Agreement that ended years of war between them.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssoufca, in a statement urged the two countries to “embrace dialogue, good neighbourliness as the best path to durable good-neighbourliness”.
He paid tribute to the historic achievement of peace that the agreement represented, and to the enduring aspirations of the peoples of both nations for cooperation and shared prosperity.
The Chairperson extended his deep appreciation to Algeria for its role in facilitating and shepherding the negotiations that culminated in the signing of the Agreement.
Mr. Youssouf stressed that the stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, and the wellbeing of their peoples, depend on sustained efforts to strengthen trust, deepen cooperation, and prevent escalations that undermine collective security.
“The Chairperson reiterates the readiness of the Commission to support both states—and the wider region—in advancing peace, development, and cross border cooperation.”
Mr. Youssouf said the AUC remains committed to accompanying all efforts that reinforce regional stability and uphold the principles of the African Union.
The 25th anniversary comes as a war of words between the two countries escalates with fears that they are moving closer to war again.
Eritrea last week withdrew from the East African regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), saying the organisation was becoming a tool against countries like itself.
It said the organisation had strayed from its founding principles and failed to contribute to regional stability.
Eritrea has always accused IGAD of being biased in favour of Ethiopia with which it fought a long war.
IGAG has expressed regret at Eritrea's decision and urged it to reconsider its position.
It said that Eritrea had self suspended its participation in the Organisation for nearly two decades before formally rejoining in June 2023.
The statement said since June 2023, IGAD has noted with regret that Eritrea has not participated in IGAD meetings, programmes, or activities.
