Indian Ocean Islands Games: Mauritius takes early lead

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - Mauritius has taken an early lead at the ongoing 9th Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) at the Island of La Reunion, with six gold, five silver and six bronze medals for a total of 17 medals, PANA reported Monday.

Four of the gold medals won by Mauritius were in handisports while the remaining two were in women's semi-marathon and men's triple jump.

Madagascar is currently in second place with 6 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze for a total of 12 medals, followed by the hosts with 4 gold, 8 silver and three bronze for a total of 15.

Maldives is fourth on the medals table with 1 gold and 1 bronze for a total of two medals, Seychelles has won only 2 bronze medals to place fifth while Mayotte is holding the rear with only one bronze.

Six countries - Mauritius, Madagascar, La Réunion, Maldives, Seychelles and Mayotte - are taking part in the competition that will last until Sunday.

The Comoros has withdrawn from the games.
