IGAD chief congratulates Somalia's new president

Djibouti, Djibouti (PANA) – Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of East African sub-regional group, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), on Monday congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his election as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

A post on the website of IGAD said the Executive Secretary extended the group's warmest  congratulations to Sheikh Mohamud, the Government and the people of Somalia upon his election on Sunday, "an exercise that marked a successful conclusion of the country’s election cycle".

Somali parliamentarians elected former leader Sheikh Mohamud as the next president, polling 214 votes to defeat his main challenger, incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed "Farmajo", who had 110 votes.

Dr. Workneh noted that the new president's victory, earning him a second stint in the office of the President of Somalia, "is a clear testimony of the trust and confidence that the people of Somalia have in his leadership qualities".

The IGAD Executive Secretary expressed confidence that President Sheikh Mohamud will move expeditiously to form an inclusive Cabinet, and begin the enormous task of uniting the Somali people and tackle other urgent national priorities, including preserving the security gains, sustain focus on fighting Al Shabaab, and addressing the dire humanitarian situation.

IGAD stands ready to support the Government in this regard, he said.

“IGAD, including its Organs and Institutions, pledge their continued support and look forward to working with you to deliver on your national priorities, and promote regional integration and development,” Dr. Workneh said.

He also commended former President, Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmajo” for preserving the country’s emerging democratic tradition and facilitating a smooth handover to the new President.

The outgoing president, who had been in power since 2017, has conceded defeat, and the victorious Mohamud has been sworn in.

In tweet, Mohamed "Farmajo" congratulated Sheikh Mohamud on his election as the nation's 10th president. "I urge all my fellow citizens to support & pray for his success. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who contributed to smooth & peaceful elections."

Sheikh Mohamud was Somalia’s president between 2012 and 2017, when he was defeated by  Mohamed "Farmajo".
