UN SG reaffirms commitment to support Libyans' choice to end their crisis

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has reaffirmed his "interest and concern to support the Libyan choice to emerge from the current crisis and establish stability and peace in Libya".

This commitment came during a meeting between Mr Guterres and Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sonni, at the UN headquarters in New York.

In a tweet, Mr Al-Sonni wrote: "In an important meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, I discussed the latest developments in Libya and the challenges that have prevented the holding of the elections that were scheduled for December 24.

"The political process in Libya is facing blockages after the National Electoral Commission postponed the 24 December presidential election, explaining its decision by political circumstances and judicial appeals against the candidates."

In response, the House of Representatives (Parliament) has formed a committee to draw up a new roadmap, in consultation with all Libyan political parties, for the next period leading to the holding of general elections as soon as possible, in line with Libyans' aspirations.

The Libyan diplomat said that the meeting with the UN boss discussed "ways to effectively support the UN and its various bodies in the next phase to ensure transparent and fair elections whose results will be accepted when a new roadmap is agreed upon".

He added that the way to support the path of reconciliation and transitional justice and the creation of a comprehensive national dialogue and the possible role of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in this framework, were among the topics discussed at the meeting.

For his part, Mr Al-Sonni stressed "the need to support the Libyans' will to determine their own destiny without any diktat and to find practical solutions to the challenges of the democratic path and ways to reach a national consensus and avoid previous mistakes.

"Libyans have indicated their desire to take responsibility regarding the political process in a way that ensures that there is no exclusion from any external interference and an end to the presence of foreigners of all kinds". -0- PANA BY/IS/BBA/VAO 9Jan2022
