UN-Habitatat to help Kenya tackle urbanization challenges
Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - The UN-Habitat will establish a special committee to deal with Kenya’s urbanisation challenges, UN Habitat Executive Director Joan Clos has said.
Speaking on Saturday when he paid a courtesy call on President Mwai Kibaki at his Harambee House office, Mr. Clos said the UN-Habitat will also provide more funds and technical support to Kenya’s slum upgrading project.
The UN-Habitat Executive Director said his organisation would continue working closely with the Government of Kenya to ensure adequate and environmentally sustainable shelter for all.
Clos said UN-Habitat was in the process of coming up with new development plans which, if adopted, would improve Mavoko, Nyeri, Thika, Kakamega, Eldoret, Embu and Nakuru municipalities.
President Kibaki reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of the urban poor and welcomed UN-Habitat’s support for the slum upgrading project.
Citing the example of Kibera where some residents were relocated to blocks of apartments, the Head of State said his Government was encouraged by the cooperation it had received from UN-Habitat.
“Indeed, the Kenya slum upgrading project supported by UN-Habitat is a high priority for the Government as it is aimed at providing decent shelter and uplifting the living conditions of the urban poor,” the President said.
In this regard, the President expressed the hope that there would be continued collaboration in other projects including the sustainable neighbourhood programme in Mavoko Municipality, which involves linking slum upgrading activities with capacity-building and income generating through a self-help construction projects.
