Top Libyan official announces AU support for national reconciliation project

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Deputy Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Abdallah Al-Lafi, has announced the support of the African Union (AU) for the national reconciliation project.

It will create the conditions for its success, ensure the participation of the pan-African organisation's mission and provide technical support and advice.

He was speaking at a dialogue session held on Tuesday in Tripoli attended by the head of the African Union mission, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville, Jean-Claude Gakosso, who is the Special Envoy of the Congolese President, Denis Sassou Nguesso, Chairperson of the High Level Committee of Heads of State and Government of the AU on Libya and the Adviser on National Reconciliation to the Presidential Council, Mohamed Hassan Al-Labbad.

A number of dignitaries and sages from various cities and regions, the Libyan Federation of Martyrs' Associations, the beneficiaries of the victims, the head and members of the Follow-up Committee of the National Reconciliation Project and the mayor of Tawergha also participated in the meeting.

Mr. Al-Lafi added that the AU is not the only one to have a role to play in Libya, adding that the stage requires taking into account the interests of the country and assuming responsibility in order to move towards reconciliation.

He said, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Council, that "reconciliation is the only way to achieve civil peace in Libya through the national reconciliation law, taking into account the restoration of the rights to their owners, the disclosure of facts and reparation for widows, orphans and bereaved people".

The deputy chairman of the Presidential Council asked the participants to present visions and proposals that strengthen the success of the reconciliation project.

The Congolese Foreign Minister confirmed that he had come to listen to Libyans vision on reconciliation, and that he is fully prepared to help achieve true reconciliation, leading to elections, security and stability.

Mr Gakosso added that the AU supports the national reconciliation efforts and the building of a democratic civilian state, to achieve free and fair elections, in accordance with a legal framework.
