South African football legend signed as a Manchester United coach

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African football legend Benni McCarthy has been appointed as a coach for English premiership side Manchester United with immediate effect.The national team's all-time top scorer with 31 goals is also the only South African to have won the UEFA Champions League when he represented Porto in 2003.

As a forward’s coach, the 44-year-old is expected to train Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, among others.

He previously played in the Premier League for West Ham and Blackburn Rovers where he finished as the second highest scorer during the 2006/07 campaign with 18 goals. The only player who scored more that season was Chelsea legend Didier Drogba who scored 20 times.

Along with veteran Egyptian striker Hossam Hassan, McCarthy was the joint top scorer in the 1998 African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso with seven goals, including four in 13 minutes against Namibia. In addition, he was named Player of the Tournament.
