Organisation of Islamic Cooperation calls for compromise between ECOWAS and Mali

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is calling for a compromise between the Malian junta and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following stiff sanctions  against the country after disagreements of an acceptable transition time table to return to constitutional rule.

The call was made on Tuesday in Bamako by the Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary General for Africa, Prof. Nassirou Bako-Arifari, at the end of his meeting with the President of the Transition of Mali, Colonel Assimi Goïta, at the Koulouba Palace.

The envoy conveyed a message of support from the OIC Secretary General to the Head of State and the Malian people in these times of multidimensional crisis, marked by the sanctions imposed on Mali by ECOWAS and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) since 9 January 2022.

The OIC, according to its envoy, considers Mali to be "a pivotal and essential state with regard to Islam as well as the stability and security, in general, of the Sahel region and the whole of the ECOWAS area".
