One killed, 2 injured in North Darfur IDP camp shooting

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - One person was killed and several others injured when armed men attempted to loot a shop within an internally-displaced persons' camp in Darfur, western Sudan, the United Nations African Union (UNAMID) said in a statement here Thursday.

"A UNAMID patrol in Zamzam Internally-Displaced Persons (IDP) camp was informed about a shooting incident on 29 November, leading to the death of one IDP and injury to others. Armed men in military attire reportedly attempted to loot two shops in the camp," the press release said, explaining that the shop owner's resistance brought about the reinforcement of the armed group, followed by random shooting, which led to the killing of one person and injury to two others.

It said the injured received initial medical aid at an NGO medical facility in the camp and were later transferred to a Fashir, north Darfur, hospital.

Meanwhile, the peacekeeping forces leadership said UNAMID Thursday facilitated the transportation of a medical team from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the State Ministry of Health to El Taweisha locality, North Darfur, where an outbreak of diphtheria has been reported.

"The purpose of the team is to reinforce the health personnel on ground to contain the spread of diphtheria in El Taweisha area. So far, WHO and Ministry of Health officials in the area have confirmed nine cases of diphtheria and 100 suspected cases that are under investigation," the release said, adding that about 12 children are suspected to have died from the disease in the locality.

The statement said, according to WHO, the outbreak is affecting children below the ages of 15 years.
