OIC to hold emergency meeting on Somalia

New York, US (PANA) - The Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Executive Committee at the ministerial level will hold an emergency meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, on 17 August, to discuss efforts on the famine in southern Somalia and surrounding areas.

A statement e-mailed to PANA in New York on Wednesday, said the meeting would be
chaired by OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.

It stated: "The government of Somalia appealed to OIC for help. The Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdulwali Mohamed Ali, sent a letter to the Secretary-General urging OIC and its member states to come to the rescue of the Somali people suffering the consequences of drought, high food prices and terrorist acts."

It quoted the letter by the Prime Minister as saying that, "the displaced people will not
escape death if God did not save them and the hands of assistance did not reach them
and the hearts of the Islamic countries’ peoples and governments did not soften."

The statement also disclosed that the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has invited
his colleagues to hold the emergency meeting in Istanbul.

Meanwhile, OIC said that the process of providing assistance to the affected people in Somalia through the OIC's Alliance of Humanitarian Organisations, which was announced in Istanbul on 28 July, was underway.

It said the Director of the OIC Coordination Office of humanitarian and relief action in Mogadishu, Ahmed Mohamed Adam, declared that the total aid and humanitarian support donated by Kuwait to the affected people in Somalia so far amounted to 3,000 tons distributed through the OIC Alliance of Humanitarian Organisations.

It said the alliance included 15 humanitarian organisations that are currently active in
Somalia.

The statement also noted that the alliance delivered the aid donated by Kuwait in the south and middle of Somalia, which are the most hit areas by drought and famine.

The OIC further said it had distributed assistance to the displaced people, which included high-nutrition biscuits to 913 displaced children and food items comprising corn, cooking oil and beans to 913 displaced families in Shabs and Karan neighborhoods.
