Maltese Airline flight marks resumption of air service with Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - A Maltese Airlines landed Monday at Maitigua Airport in Tripoli, marking the resumption of direct flights between the Libyan capital and Valletta, following a memorandum signed between the two countries.

Libyan Minister of Transport Mohamed al-Chhoubi and  Maltese Minister of Economy held a joint press at which the former recalled that the resumption of the air service followed a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries during the visit of Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Al-Dbaiba to Malta.

He pointed out that four weekly flights will be operated on the route to promote economic cooperation, increase trade and facilitate the movement of people.

On 9 September, the Libyan and Maltese Ministries of Transport signed an agreement on the opening of the airspace between the two countries after completing the preparation of required protocols, Prime Minister Al-Dbaiba said.

International flights had stopped coming Libya since 2014 due to the deterioration of security in the capital and clashes between rival armed groups.

However, airlines such as Tunisair and Egypt Air have resumed flights to Libya since the installation of the national unity government and the gradual return of stability in the country.
