Malian Foreign Minister meets AU Commissioner for Political Affairs

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, on Tuesday met with the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union (AU), Bankolé Adeoye, ahead of the third meeting of the Monitoring and Support Group for the Transition in Mali (GST-Mali), which has opened in Lomé, Togo, the Malian Press Agency (AMAP) reported on Wednesday.

This meeting in the Togolese capital is an opportunity for Bamako to present the progress in the transition process and benefit from the support of the international community.

"This support group, which was set up with the agreement of the government, includes the AU, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations," Mr. Diop said.

He said the main objective is to allow greater mobilisation of the international community with a major role for Africans around the transition process.

The minister said that Mali would present its concerns during the meeting, which is being held after the lifting of economic and financial sanctions last July by ECOWAS and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) against Mali last July.

"It is also being held after significant progress was made in the transition process with the setting of the timetable in consensus with the sub-regional body," Mr. Diop said.

He cited the establishment of the Commission for the drafting of the new Constitution and the adoption of the new electoral law as as important progress that has been made.

In view of the progress made, the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs hoped that "the international community would understand, support and commit to Mali's priorities".
