Libyan authorities discuss resumption of international flights

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - An expanded meeting was held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tripoli, focusing on ways to bring back international flights to Libyan airports after seven years of interruption.

The meeting was attended by the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs for International Cooperation and Organisations, Omar Ketti, and that of the Communications for Air Transport Affairs, Khaled Souissi.

The directors of the civil aviation and airports departments, and delegates from the Ministry of Interior, the Customs Directorate and the Internal Security Agency, also attended the meetin, said a statement from the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It said that during the meeting, the difficulties encountered by the air transport sector and the mechanism to face them in coordination between the different sectors were reviewed.

The situation at Libyan airports and their capacity to receive international flights were also discussed.

In this regard, the participants stressed the importance of intensifying efforts and optimising coordination between the different sectors in charge of conducting air transport operations, which will contribute to alleviating the travel burden of citizens and facilitating travel procedures at airports.

Most foreign airlines stopped flying to Libya in 2014 due to the negative security situation, marked by clashes between armed groups in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

During this period, the international airport was partially burned.

But since the national unity government took office in March, after the completion of the political process under the aegis of the UN, Libya has entered a phase of normalisation that has allowed the return of embassies and international diplomatic missions, as well as the resumption of some air links with Tunisia, Egypt and Malta.
