Libyan FM welcomes AU support for reconciliation and stability in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Najla al-Mangouch, Monday hailed the great role played by the African Union (AU) in supporting efforts for stability and national reconciliation in Libya.

Ms. al-Mangouch said this at a joint press conference in Tripoli with Congolese Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso, whose country holds the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) High Level Committee on Libya.

The head of the Libyan diplomacy also praised Congo's efforts to support and show solidarity with the Libyan people in the area of national reconciliation.

The Libyan Presidential Council, which oversees the national reconciliation file, is expected to unveil next Thursday its vision on the national strategy for national reconciliation in Libya to be implemented by a High Commission for National Reconciliation.

She also affirmed that the ministry of Foreign Affairs would never give up its role in promoting stability in Libya, assuring that the government of national unity would continue to work towards holding elections and achieving national reconciliation.

Gakosso said he had come to Tripoli to talk about peace and national reconciliation, as one of the conditions for holding general elections in Libya.

He stressed the African Union's interest in peace and security in Libya, adding that "the reconciliation process is difficult, but necessary".

He said he had met the prime minister of the government of national unity, Abdelhamid al-Dbaiba, together with Ms al-Mangouch, adding: "We have the same view on the Libyan situation, and we have exchanged ideas in this context."

A final round of consultations between the parliament and the High State Council under the auspices of the United Nations, for the elaboration of a consensus constitutional basis for the holding of elections was concluded on Sunday evening in Cairo, Egypt, without overcoming the points of divergence relating mainly to the transitional period before the elections and the conditions of candidacy for the presidency of Libya.

A meeting has been scheduled in ten days by the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, bringing together the presidents of the Parliament and High Council of State to iron out their disagreements and reach a consensus on the constitutional aspect.
