Gambia's President Adama Barrow begins second term on Wednesday

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Gambia's President Adama Barrow, who won his re-election bid on 4 December last year after beating long time opposition leader Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party, will be inaugurated for his second five-year term on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old former real estate developer will take the oath of office at to be administered by Chief Justice Hassan Bubacarr Jallow at a ceremony at the Independence Stadium, Bakau. He was re-elected with 53% of the votes.

Barrow will be sworn in before MPs, several heads of state, and other high-ranking local and international guests and observers.

Among the Heads of State expected are the Presidents of Togo, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Senegai, Liberia and Ghana, the current chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

US President Joe Biden has designated Richard Carlton Paschall III, US Ambassador to The Gambia, to lead his country's delegation.

In his victory speech last December, Barrow said: "My re-election is a demonstration of the trust Gambians have reposed in me in appreciation of the achievements chalked during my first term, and for the considerable amount of work left for the next four years."

He said his government would draft a new constitution that would introduce presidential term limits.
