FIFA U-20 World Cup: Ghana is 1st African country through to round of 16

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Ghana has become the first African country to qualify for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

In their final Group B match early Friday in Auckland, the Ghanaians defeated Panama 1-0 to go through with seven points from three matches, having drawn 1-1 with with Austria and beaten Argentina 3-2.

Austria also qualified from that group with five points after drawing 0-0 with Argentina early Friday and having beaten Panama 2-1 and the 1-1 draw with Ghana.

Argentina, with two points, and Panama, with just one point, are eliminated from the competition.

Ghana and Austria now join USA, Portugal and Brazil in the round of 16 although those three still have one match in hand respectively.

Nigeria, Mali and Senegal are still struggling to qualify.
