FAO pleads for establishment of instruments to fund food security in Congo

Brazzaville, Congo (PANA)   -   The country representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Programme (FAO), Suze Percy Filippini, Friday urged Congo’s parliamentarians to encourage the government to establish the necessary instruments to fund and promote food security, an official source said here.

Filippini, who made the call after talks with the speaker of the Congolese Senate, Pierre Ngolo, said the World Food Programme (WFP), FAO, UNICEF and WHO were considering support for the Congolese parliament in the promotion of sound and nutritive food and its availability.

She told the parliamentarians who received the mandate of the people that they were the right men to advocate food and nutritional security.

"We came to meet with the Speaker of the Congolese Senate to have his opinion and instructions concerning the support which FAO is considering taking in the organisation of a sub-regional forum with the Parliament of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) on food and nutritional security," she said.

The FAO representative stated that, within the framework of the preparations for the forum on sound and nutritive food to be hosted in September in Congo, a technical workshop would be held to establish the mechanisms for hosting the event.

"Congo is the first country in Central Africa and the Economic Community of Central African States to establish a parliamentary alliance for food and nutritional security," said Filippini.
