Ethiopian crisis: Sudan welcomes signing of peace agreement

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan has welcomed the peace agreement signed in South Africa between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) to end two years of a bloody war.

“We commend the positive spirit that prevailed among the parties to the negotiations, and their holding high the national interests, national unity and interest of the Ethiopian sister people,” the Vice President of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, was quoted by the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) as saying on Thursday.

He commended the role played by the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) which resulted in the signing of the agreement.

“Sudan values highly the efforts of the African Union mediation and all other good offices that contributed to the conclusion of the agreement,” Lt. Gen. Daglo said.

The Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF concluded the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in Pretoria, South Africa, on Wednesday.

The AU-led peace talks were steered by the African Union Panelists, Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria and AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa; Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya; and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuke former South African deputy President.
