ECOWAS to inaugurate Hq of Regional Maritime Safety Centre in Abidjan

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Regional Maritime Safety Centre for West Africa (CRESMAO) based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, 31 March 2022.

This will be during a ceremony organised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission in collaboration with the Ivorian Government, an official source said.

Created by decision of ECOWAS leaders on 31 July 2018, CRESMAO is an essential tool for the implementation of the ECOWAS Integrated Maritime Strategy (SMIC) adopted on 29 March 2014, says an ECOWAS communiqué.

It proposes a set of comprehensive priority actions at national and regional levels to address the challenges facing the maritime domain.

It includes five strategic objectives, which are: maritime governance; maritime safety and security; marine environmental management; ECOWAS maritime economy; and maritime awareness and research.

CRESMAO is placed under the authority of the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the ECOWAS Commission.
