ECOWAS mediator for Mali received by President of Transition

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Mali, Thursday called on the President of the Transition in Mali, Colonel Assimi Goita, PANA learned from the Malian presidency.

He said at the end of the meeting that he had come to refine the ongoing discussions with a view to bringing the positions closer together.

For the ECOWAS mediator, this visit aims at finding ways and means to relaunch the dialogue between the Malian side and the sub-regional institution which adopted sanctions against Mali at the end of its extraordinary summit on 9 January.

Without stating the conclusion of the various discussions he had with the Malian authorities since his arrival in Mali, Jonathan reassured that the discussions with the Malian side had been enriching and "will continue".

On the question of the duration of the transition, the mediator said a technical working group comprising ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations was already in place.

The conclusions reached by this group, he explained, had made it possible to draw up a framework of recommendations that would guide the decisions to be taken in the near future.
